Head of Claims Funding Australia

Jason Geisker is the Head of Claims Funding Australia, the litigation funding arm and wholly owned subsidiary of Maurice Blackburn. He is a Principal Lawyer based in Maurice Blackburn’s Sydney office.

Jason is highly regarded by his peers as a class action and commercial litigation lawyer. He is one of the select few class action lawyers to have been recognised by his peers in the Doyles’ rankings both as a leading lawyer in the field of commercial litigation and dispute resolution in New South Wales and a leading class action lawyer in Australia.

Jason holds a Masters of Law from the University of New South Wales. Since his admission to practice in 1996, Jason has acted in several high-profile matters, including a number of shareholder, investor and consumer class actions.

Drawing on his extensive commercial litigation, class action and dispute resolution experience, Jason implements strategies that aim to maximise outcomes for claimants. A tenacious and diligent lawyer, Jason always pursues cases with the client’s strategic objectives front of mind.

In the first case of its kind in Australia Jason oversaw the conduct of the Australian class actions against disgraced German vehicle manufacturers Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda following the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal. These class actions were commenced in 2015 on behalf of over 100,000 Australian motorists seeking compensation for the sale of dirty diesel vehicles in Australia, which were misrepresented to consumers as environmentally friendly, low emission, clean diesel technology. These class actions resulted in settlement exceeding $170m for the benefit of impacted Australian motorists.

In his capacity as Head of Claims Funding Australia, Jason has worked with law firms across Australia and New Zealand to oversee funding of numerous commercial, insolvency and class action claims. During this period Claims Funding Australia has achieved a 94% success rate in cases it has funded.

A Federal Court action against former City Pacific Limited directors for breaches of the Corporations Act, culminating in a $70m judgment for the benefit of investors.
The Nufarm Ltd class action, which achieved a $46.625m settlement shared by 3,000 Nufarm Ltd shareholder investors.
The AWB Ltd class action, which resulted in a $39.5m settlement for 1,300 participating shareholders. This case centred on AWB’s unlawful involvement in the UN ‘Oil-for-food’ kickback scandal, involving the former Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq.
